Not sure why they have a rating of 3.8. I got 6 different cupcakes and shared them. All the cupcakes were awesome.
For Mermaids attitude about GF ⭐⭐
So, I ate the cupcake. Product review: The texture wasn't very dense, slightly spongy but more firm, yet not dry. The frosting was very light and fluffy. Not overly sweet which I thought was good. So all in all, I'd say it was a solid grade B /B+ GF cupcake. Not as good as my favorite (2Good2be) but definitely better than a lot of others I have tried.
The main reason the Mermaids score got dinged was due to the attitude of the woman running the kitchen. Even though she is making GF cupcakes, when I interacted with her, she seemed to have little knowledge or concern as to the depth of gluten sensitivities. I will give them kudos for what looked like a separate workstation for the gluten-free cupcakes across the kitchen from the regular ones but they should also have a separate corner of their display case.
For their GLUTEN FREE cupcakes ⭐⭐⭐⭐
i would love to give this bakery a better rating as the first time i went in years ago it was marvelous, they had options in both small and large sizes, cupcakes, cakes, and cookies, and pretty good hours for a sweets shop but the last few months something has clearly changed. I have left work early three times to get there before it closes and the display cases are always EMPTY, and i mean *empty* people, not even crumbs. I came in *before* work once to see if maybe it was me, but no, the display cases were empty - EMPTY - at 9am as well (They open at 7). I sent my roommate who absolutely loves the joint to try during the day thinking I must just have bad luck. Guess what? Empty cases. There was someone sweeping and two people baking that i could see on each visit as well but nothing to show for it. Maybe they have switched to a production bakery only but then they should lock their front door so foolish customers like me won't come in and expect to be able to buy something at a store that claims to have products. Gonna try one more time but I am not hopeful.
I came across this business using the Find Me GF app and was excited to know that there was an option for a cupcake. They have a limited selection of GF cupcakes. Definitely not a gluten-free facility (but I did not expect it to be. OK if they take measures to not cross contaminate). I did mention to them that the gluten-free cupcakes were underneath the regular cupcakes (but on trays), so there is a small potential for some uncontaminated cupcakes to become contaminated once they are in the display case. The girl at the counter just understand that. Then a woman who seemed to be in charge interjected, "It's not a gluten-free facility and there's always a chance of cross contamination. That's mentioned on our website.... It only matters if you're Celiac". Mmmm, OK...Nope. Not just for Celiac! I get a immune reaction (antibodies in my bloodstream), so I don't get any intestinal symptoms like Celiacs do. That attitude just tells me the Mermaids don't understand the full depth of gluten sensitivity. If they did, why would they chose to potentially cross-contaminate their product in the sales case? Why not move them to the top on the side?
Arrived mid day to an empty case and very few options to purchase a selection of cupcakes They only had chocolate and vanilla variations which looked pretty but the flavor was a bit lacking. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
I never feel compelled to write reviews or read them because I feel like people just come on to complain. However, I came in a couple of days ago and gave the specific instructions on this birthday cake that I needed, and I likely stressed out the lady at the front desk with all my questions. ( you would be surprised how hard it is to find a bakery that makes a vanilla frosting without cream cheese). When I arrived, it was pretty to look at and seems very stable. ( they need bags to put the cakes in). For the party that night I received rave reviews, and people asked where I got it from. I want to thank the staff for being helpful and understand with my request and making a great cake. I will be back !
